How to be Better than Yesterday? Proactivity VS Reactivity

Most of you can approve that making the right healthy decisions and staying active in your lives plays a huge role in your overall sense of happiness, productivity, and energy. However, have you considered how proactive you are regarding your health?

Well, proactivity is essentially a state of mind that allows you to be more conscious about your overall well being. Suppose you greatly consider the food you consume and the level of physical exercise you incorporate into your lifestyle. In that case, you can make well-informed and better lifestyle decisions that positively impact your mental and physical health.

How do our Thoughts and Behaviors Influence Our Lives?

Your thoughts comprise the information collected by your brain and sent to the mind. The mind merely acts as the doorkeeper of the computed information as it identifies the relevant information. As a result, it determines what you need to focus on. These thoughts can easily become beliefs that may positively or negatively affect your feelings.

Let’s consider a smoking example. Maybe the thought was, “I am stressed” or “I have had a tiring day.” So, I need to smoke, or I deserve a treat.

When it comes to behaviors, they are simply actions generated from your thoughts. You typically behave in a certain way because your thoughts persuade you it is the right decision to make at that moment. Therefore, if you are exhausted or feeling anxious, you may decide that smoking is the right idea to counter the thought.

As you can see, thoughts and behaviors are distinct and highly interconnected. Thus, if you are contemplating the effects of your thoughts, you can see that they substantially impact your life because they provoke behavioral responses and emotions. Your perceptions and views change how you feel and, therefore, how you respond to a scenario.

What is Reactivity?

Reactivity refers to an instant response to feelings regarding an intractable problem, issue, or circumstance. Reactions usually originate from actions that happened in the past. The best thing about reactivity is that it sparks creativity. In the process, it lets you focus on the progress instead of other issues.

What is Proactivity?

Proactivity addresses future circumstances, crises, and conditions. Being proactive entails anticipating issues or problems to design procedures that prevent negative consequences. It also lets you prepare for positive outcomes. If you incorporate proactive behavior, you will assess the whole circumstance to plan for unexpected situations.

While it’s hard to regulate your workplace setup, the best news is that you can take a couple of actions to trigger the ideal hormones. For example, the Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphin hormones in your brain can trigger a feeling of happiness and success. It is also worth noting that the levels of growth and sex hormones strongly impact your behavior and thinking.

  1. Focus on the Future

     If you put your problems at the center stage, they will unavoidably become negative hurdles to your lifestyle. Instead, it would help if you focused on the potential solutions and opportunities to have a much better lifestyle.
  3. Focus on what You can Control
     Things that you can hardly control can overwhelm you. You should avoid focusing on things you cannot actively change. Instead, put your energy into the tasks you can successfully achieve.
  4. Be Responsible
     If you have a reactive mindset, you can easily wait for someone to tell you what to do. For instance, you can wait for your bosses to decide and follow what they say. Being proactive requires you to be responsible for what you do or plan to do.
  5. Be Consistent
     In the end, being proactive is not all about getting everything correctly. It is about being consistent in the things you do. Are you persistently and consistently incorporating the right steps into your life to move closer to your goals?
  6. Make Friends with Proactive People
     It would be wise to surround yourself with individuals who are similarly motivated. So, look around and stay away from negative and lazy colleagues and friends. If you become proactive, you must stay close to individuals who encourage you to succeed.
  7. Prioritize
     For you to live proactively, it is essential to recognize why you want to do so. So, consider your goals and prioritize those that matter most to you. Remember that not all tasks and objectives are equally essential, and you shouldn’t consider them equal.
  8. Take Charge of Your Life
     Lastly, it would help if you took control of your life. Live is full of opportunities. Therefore, it is essential to eradicate the things that demean you and nurture those that motivate you. You can ask yourself some of the following questions: What do you want to achieve in life? Do you need a lot of money to consider yourself successful? Do you lack laughter and joy? Are you appreciated at your workplace? What is your dream vacation? Do you need to marry to consider yourself happy?

Being much more proactive is fundamentally a practice of mindfulness. It entails you being well-informed about everything that is happening at the moment. Remember that positivity breeds more positivity. Thus, if you continually tell yourself that you want to have a better body and health, it will undoubtedly happen.
